10th edition of the International Classification of Goods and Services for the Purposes of the Registration of Marks (Nice Classification)

On December 14, 2011, the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI), put into circulation in the Industrial Property Gazette, the 10th edition of the International Classification of Goods and Services for the Purposes of the Registration of Marks (Nice Classification), as well as the Complimentary List of Goods and Services.
The use of the Nice Classification is mandatory in Mexico as well as in all countries party to the Nice Agreement. Moreover, such Classification is obligatory for the International Registries of Marks and serves as reference in those countries that are not contracting States of such Agreement.
In order to keep the Nice Classification up to date, it is continuously revised and recently the World Intellectual Property Organization published its new edition in languages English and French.
In this way, Mexico becomes the first country that translates and updates the 10th edition of the Nice Classification, into Spanish.
The Nice Classification and the Complimentary List are useful tools for the correct classification of goods and services; moreover, they provide legal force and certainty to the users of the Intellectual Property System within the process and registration of distinctive signs.
Both mechanisms became effective as of January 1, 2012.
